Dr. Ahmed Afifi, MSc, MD, FRCS(CTh), FACC
Consultant Cardiac Surgeon Chief of Cardiac Surgery Aswan Heart Centre Magdi Yacoub Foundation , After finishing his training in adult cardiac surgery in St. Mary’s Hospital – Imperial College London and his pediatric cardiac surgery training in Great Ormond Street Hospital (London), Dr. Ahmed Afifi moved to As-wan in 2010 where he was trained by Prof. Sir Magdi Yacoub.


A Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in the field of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and a Fellow of the Amer-ican College of Cardiology, Dr. Afifi specializes in complex heart operations for adults and children. He has a special interest in aortic root surgery (with particular experience in complex operations such as the Ross Procedure and the Yacoub Remodeling Operation), mitral valve repair (where he travels to many countries performing complicated mitral valve repair and teaching his techniques to surgeons) and challenging con-genital heart operations. Dr. Afifi leads the biggest neonatal arterial switch operation program in the world at Aswan Heart Centre.
Dr. Afifi has initiated the team approach to patient care in Aswan Heart Centre by regularizing Joint Cardi-ology Cardiac Surgery (JCC) meetings, he has introduced and led the clinical audit program which has grown to become a model for the region in clinical outcome surveillance and improvement. He continues to pursue clinical efficiency and outcome improvement with his role as head of cardiac surgery and mem-ber of the Aswan Heart Centre managing board.
